Interview Advice

Interview AdviceBefore the Interview

  • Research the company interviewing you and if possible find out a little about the interviewer.
  • If the organisation havent already provided this, request an information pack from the human resources department. Look at the organisations web site. Use google and other search engines to search for relevant information about the company and the role you have applied for.
  • Be able to explain exactly why you apllied for and want the position.
  • Practice good answers to standard interview questions, such as:

- Why do you think you are right for this job?

- What are your strengths and weaknesses?

- What are your major past achievements?

- Where do you see yourself going in the next two to five years?

- What contribution do you make when working in a team?

- How would your colleagues describe you?

- Why do you want to leave your current job?

- What do you know about our company?

- What did you like best/least about your current/last job?

  • Have some questions ready to ask at the end of an interview. Asking the Employer questions demonstrates your knowledge of the organisation.
  • Never be late for an interview,m give yourself plenty of time to get there. If you don't know how to get there do a trial run a day or two before. If you're travelling by car or public transport give yourself an hour's extra travelling time in case of any delays.
  • Know the names, addresses and titles of two referees, one should be a previous employer. Ask the referees permission prior to the interview.


The Interview

Be positive, attitude is all important during an interview. A keeness and enthusiasm is a very attractive and positive attribute and one every employer is looking for. The interview is about showing your enthusiasm how personable you are.

Your attitude to work and your personality will influence the interviewer's decision whether to give you the role just as much as your qualifications and experience. However, be yourself, be confident and do your best.

General Advice

Although you will be feeling nervous try to understand and gauge what kind of technique the interviewer is using. It will fall into one of the following categories.

A structured interview - the interviewer will be following a set or list of pre-determined questions.

An unstructured interview - is more conversational, the interviewer will use open-ended questions and giving you a chance to show your personality and creativity. Keep your focus on the interview though.

Here are a few general hints and tips:

  • First impressions count. As a rule, you should look smart, tidy and professional.
  • Remember the interviewer's name. Give a good and solid handshake.
  • Be aware to make eye contact during the interview, pay attention to what the interviewer is saying.
  • Listen to what the interviewer is saying, understand the questions before you answer, if you're nervous and forget, ask the interviewer to repeat the question. Think all of your answers through carefully and speak confidently. Be aware of your body language, your posture and enthusiasm.
  • Be as honest as possible with your answers.
  • Think and be positive that the job will be yours!
  • After the Interview, write down the questions you were asked at the interview and your answers. Write down anything you could and would have answered differently for your next interview.
  • If you are unsuccessful, call or email the interviewer or organisation to ask for feedback. You can then work on the pionts they raise for your next interview.

Telephone Interviews

  • Be prepared for the interview and have a copy of your CV along with information about the organisation. Also have a pen and paper to take notes.
  • Keep track of the time.
  • Answer your phone and don't let it go to voice mail.
  • Smile when you speak. Smiling when speaking makes your voice sound positive.
  • Record a clear and professional message on your voicemail.
